Closing Days Every Monday, Check website for changes Free Admission Botanic Center Project Hall2, Magok Cultural Hall Paid Admission Greenhouse, Display Gardens More Information on Our Website (botanicpark.seoul.go.kr) Contact +82.2.2104.9786, 9888, 9882 botanicpark.seoul.go.kr 우리들의 자연, 행성적 공존 Our Nature, Planetary Coexistence 서울식물원은 식물문화를 사유하고 생태 감수성 공유를 위해 다양한 장르의 현대미술 전시를 개최해 왔습니다. 2025년 기획전시 《우리들의 자연, 행성적 공존》은 자연을 바라보는 새로운 시각과 관점을 제시하고자 합니다. 전시는 우리가 살아가는 이 행성, 지구 안에서 생명과 비생명, 인간과 비인간의 경계를 넘어 '우리'가 되어보는 시도이며, 자연을 타자가 아닌 이 세계를 구성하는 존재로 바라보려 합니다. 《우리들의 자연, 행성적 공존》의 주제는 영문학자이자 생태 이론가인 티머시 모턴(Timothy Morton)의 '하이퍼객체(초객체, Hyperobjects)'의 개념에서 출발했습니다. 모턴은 자연과 비자연을 이분법적으로 구분하는 대신 세계를 하나로 뒤엉킨 복합체로 바라보고, 우주 전체를 하나의 커다란 관계망(mesh)으로 이해하는 생태적 인식을 제안합니다. 이번 전시는 자연, 생태, 예술의 관계를 고민하고 실험하는 김주현 양지윤·장한나 최성임 작가가 참여합니다. 그리고, 서로 다른 공간적 특성을 지닌 로비형 전시실, 온실, 야외 정원, 그리고 국가등록문화유산 건축물 네 장소에서 진행됩니다. 작가들은 예술작품과 자연이 공존하는 공간을 구현하고자 했습니다. 식물문화센터 중심에 위치한 프로젝트홀2에서는 생명이 자라나는 순간과 자연에서 경험한 감정을 포착하여 완성한 양지윤의 작품을 만날 수 있습니다. 열대기후에 속한 4개국과 지중해 기후에 속한 8개국의 식물들이 살고 있는 온실(기획전시실, 연못, 스카이워크 행잉)에서 최성임은 식물 구조에 착안하여 온실의 식물과 작품을 연결하는 인공 정원을 선보입니다. 또한, 사계절의 변화와 아름다움을 느낄 수 있는 주제원(오늘의 정원)에서는 자연에서 발견한 나선형 구조에 착안해 제작한 김주현의 설치작품이 정원의 식물들과 조화롭게 자리한 장면이 펼쳐집니다. 마지막으로, 1928년 준공한 근현대 농업의 역사를 담고 있는 국가 등록문화유산 마곡문화관(서울 구 양천수리조합 배수펌프장)에서는 자연의 일부로서 인간-비인간 존재들이 얽혀 살아가는 거대한 네트워크 공간을 구현한 장한나 작가의 작품이 전시됩니다. 우리들의 자연, 행성적 공존은 자연적·인위적 존재들 간의 경계를 허물고 우리 모두가 하나의 행성 안에 연결된 생태적 존재들(ecological beings)임을 상상해 보는 전시입니다. 전시를 통해 우리가 연결된 존재라는 것을 감각해 보고 사유하는 시간이 되기를 희망합니다. Seoul Botanic Park has organized varying genres of contemporary art exhibitions to reflect upon botanical culture and promote ecological awareness. In our 2025 special exhibition, Our Nature, Planetary Coexistence, we aimed to present novel perspectives and viewpoints on nature. Specifically, this exhibition aspired to present a singular "we" within the planet we inhabit, Earth, without drawing lines between life and non-life, or human and non-human, and to view nature not as the other but as the entity that constitutes the world. The theme of Our Nature, Planetary Coexistence was inspired by "hyperobjects," a concept proposed by the English scholar and ecological theorist Timothy Morton. Instead of classifying things through the dichotomy of nature vs. non-nature, Morton's ecological perspective proposes that we view the world as a compound entity intertwined into an ensemble and perceive the entire universe as a large relational mesh. Our Nature, Planetary Coexistence features Kim Joohyun, Yang Jiyoon, Chang Hanna, and Choi Sungim: artists who contemplate and experiment with the relationships nature, ecology, and art can have with one another. As for the venue, the exhibition spans four locations that each have distinct spatial characteristics a lobby-type exhibition hall, a greenhouse, an outdoor garden, and a state-designated cultural heritage building - and in each of these locations, the artists endeavored to contrive spaces where art and nature coexist. In Project Hall2 at the heart of the Botanic Center, visitors encounter Yang's work that translates moments of life's growth and the emotions we experience from nature. The Greenhouse, an impressive facility housing plants from four tropical-climate countries and eight Mediterranean-climate countries, has three sub-exhibition venues: Special Exhibition Zone, Pond, and Skywalk Hanging Installation. Here, Choi took inspiration from plants' physical structures to conjure an artificial garden that links the greenhouse's flora with her works across all three spaces. Display Gardens (Seasonal Garden) is an outdoor venue where visitors can experience the ever-changing beauty of the four seasons, and here, Kim's installations, inspired by spiral structures in nature, harmoniously coexist with the garden's diverse outdoor vegetation. Lastly, in Magok Cultural Hall (originally built in 1928 as "Drainage Pumping Station of Former Yangcheon Irrigation Association Seoul" and now a state-designated cultural heritage that preserves the history of early modern agriculture) Chang unveils works visualizing the vast web-like tapestry in which human and non-human entities are interwoven and living together as equal members of nature. Our Nature, Planetary Coexistence wishes to knock down the wall separating natural and artificial entities and to remind ourselves that we are all ecological beings interconnected on a single planet.
