김우진 Kim Woojin

서울시립 북서울미술관에서 진행 중인 《일렉트릭 쇼크》의 참여 작가 김우진의 인터뷰를 공개합니다.

김우진은 오늘날 디지털 전환의 흐름 속에서 점차 사라지고 있는 언어의 ‘디지털 멸종’에 주목합니다. 그는 이러한 현상을 하나의 징후로 삼아, 이미 우리의 세계가 전기 공급이 중단된 듯한 어둠 속 좁아진 세계에 도달한 것은 아닌지 질문합니다. 작가는 일반화의 논리 아래 주류가 아닌 것들이 쉽게 배제되는 작금의 위태로운 현실을 출발점으로, 다음 세대를 위한 언어의 ‘마지막 기록 보관소’를 구상했다고 전합니다. 이번 신작은 전기가 사라져 더 이상 디지털 기록이 불가능한 상태를 가정하고, 수동 오르골과 시아노타입 사진을 통해 언어를 기록하고 보존할 수 있는 대안을 제시합니다.

김우진의 작품은 오는 3월 22일까지 서울시립 북서울미술관 전시실 1과 전시실 3에서 만나보실 수 있습니다. 많은 관심을 바랍니다.

We are pleased to share an interview with Kim Woojin, a participating artist in Electric Shock, currently on view at Buk-Seoul Museum of Art.

Kim Woojin focuses on the “digital extinction” of language that is gradually disappearing amid today’s wave of digital transformation. Taking this phenomenon as a sign, she asks whether our world may have already arrived at a narrowed, darkened state—as if the supply of electricity had been cut off. Starting from the precarious state of a society in which those outside the mainstream are easily excluded under the logic of generalization, the artist conceived a “last shelter” of language for future generations. In this new series, Kim assumes a condition in which electricity has disappeared and digital documentation is no longer possible. She proposes alternative ways of preserving and transmitting language through hand-cranked music boxes and cyanotype prints.
