The “Gugak Artist Lab” initiative, launched by the National Gugak Center, aims to support traditional artists and encourage the development of online content rooted in traditional arts.

This endeavor focuses on fostering “Gugak Creators” by offering support in video education and production. It seeks to enrich and broaden the scope of traditional arts, exploring new possibilities and expanding its reach through regional programs and the inclusion of international participants. The project emphasizes creative and sensory experiences in the digital realm, paving the way for innovative expressions of traditional art forms.

[작품소개/ Introduction]

Out to the ocean은 판소리 심청가와 수궁가에 등장하는 ‘범피중류’ 대목을 재구성한 곡이다. 안향련 명창의 심청가 범피중류를 듣고 멜로디 라인을 판소리 창법이 아닌 개인의 노래로 승화시켜 피아노와 즉흥연주를 통해 곡을 구성하였다.

2022년 강남 일대가 침수되는 사건이 있었다. 지구온난화에 대해 늘 생각은 했지만, 피부로 와닿은 적은 처음이라 이 이슈가 미래에 대한 공포로 다가왔다. 2023년 초에 곡이 구성되었으며, 이 곡은 개인의 환경문제에 대한 공포감 그리고 불안감을 해소하고 더 나아가 지구온난화, 해양환경을 위해 힘쓰시는 분들에게 음악으로 마음을 전달하고자 한다. 

"Out to the Ocean" is a reimagined piece based on the "Bumpijungryu" section of the traditional Korean Pansori works, Simcheongga and Sugungga. Inspired by the rendition of Simcheongga's Bumpijungryu by the renowned singer An Hyang-ryeon, the melody line was transformed from the Pansori style of vocalization into a personal style. It was then combined with piano and improvisation elements to craft a unique composition.

The song was inspired by a real-life event: the 2022 flooding in the Gangnam district, Seoul. This incident brought the abstract threat of global warming into a tangible, personal experience, transforming a general concern into a palpable fear for the future. Composed in early 2023, "Out to the Ocean" aims to soothe the fears and anxieties surrounding environmental issues. Beyond personal solace, it also serves as a musical tribute to those dedicated to combating global warming and preserving our marine environments.
