The “Gugak Artist Lab” initiative, launched by the National Gugak Center, aims to support traditional artists and encourage the development of online content rooted in traditional arts.

This endeavor focuses on fostering “Gugak Creators” by offering support in video education and production. It seeks to enrich and broaden the scope of traditional arts, exploring new possibilities and expanding its reach through regional programs and the inclusion of international participants. The project emphasizes creative and sensory experiences in the digital realm, paving the way for innovative expressions of traditional art forms.

[작품소개/ Introduction]

오선보는 이렇게 말한다. 여기가 빅뱅의 순간입니다. 우향우하세요. 다섯 개의 평행선이 달음질치고 있습니다. 과거에서 현재를 거쳐 미래로, 마침내 종말로 향하는 시간의 선을 따라가세요. 정간보는 이렇게 말한다. 이것이 윤회의 규칙입니다. 리듬을 한 번 타고 나면, 다시 한 번 타세요. 그 다음에, 또 리듬을 타세요. 반복되는 리듬, 순환하는 시간의 원을 따라 자꾸 돌아오세요.

음악 〈제조〉는 반복되는 자진모리 장단과 8마디 단위 코드진행을 바탕으로 새를 흉내내는 다양한 소리들이 들고 나며 이루어진다. 반복의 테마는 그래픽스코어가 그리는 원과 정간보의 이미지를 통해 형상화된다. 새를 흉내내는 소리들은 소리의 음색과 질감을 시각화한 이미지들로 번역되어 숲의 모습을 띤다. 새에서 소리로, 소리에서 이미지로, 존재에 대한 번역은 거듭할수록 추상화되고 원형에서 멀어진다. 그러나 그 끝에는 다시 새와 닮은 무언가가 자리하고 있다. 원을 따라 마침내 한 번 돌아온 것처럼.

The staff says this: "This is the moment of the Big Bang. Proceed rightward. Five parallel lines are galloping. Follow the line of time heading from the past through the present to the future, and finally towards the end." 

The Jeongganbo (traditional Korean musical score) says this: "This is the rule of reincarnation. Once you ride the rhythm, ride it again. Then, ride the rhythm once more. Keep returning along the repeating rhythm, the circle of circulating time.“

This piece “Jejo” is crafted with a continuous flow of Jajinmori rhythms and chord progressions in segments of eight bars, interspersed with an array of sounds that mimic birds. This motif of repetition is brought to life visually through a circular graphic score and Jeongganbo's imagery. The avian-like sounds are transformed into visual representations, capturing their tone and texture, creating an illusion of a forest. As the piece progresses, the transition from bird sounds to musical notes, and then to visual images, becomes more abstract, drifting further from the original form. Yet, in the end, we return to something reminiscent of a bird, completing a full circle.

오선보에 있었던 음들이 모두 흩어져 사라진다. 사라진 음들이 다시 모여 추상적인 도형들로 쌓이고 서로 연결된다.  들리는 순간 사라지는 〈제조〉의 소리들은 새의 소리를 닮았고, 악기의 음들을 닮았고, 자연의 음들을 닮았다. 이 모든 소리를 시각화된 기호들 속에 담고 싶었지만, 언제나 흘려보내진 것들이 있을 것이다. 돌고 돌아 다시 시작으로 돌아오는 〈제조〉의 흐름을 보는 누군가에게는 또 다른 도형들이 떠오르기를 바라는 마음으로 그렸다.

In this piece, the notes initially present on the staff scatter and vanish. The vanished notes then reconvene, forming abstract, interconnected shapes.

The fleeting sounds of “Jejo,” reminiscent of birdsong, musical instrument tones, and nature's own melodies, vanish as soon as they are heard.

My intention was to capture these ephemeral sounds within visual symbols, acknowledging that some nuances inevitably slip away. This piece is an invitation to the observer to embark on a journey with “Jejo,” where its cyclical nature may inspire the emergence of new shapes and ideas as we return to the beginning.
