희망 속에서 건축의 다양한 가능성을 탐구하는 건축가 조민석입니다.

00:08 상생하는 열린 공간 An open space for co-existence

주변에서는 일곱 개의 골목길로 접근할 수 있습니다. 그전에는 한 쪽에서만 들어올 수가 있었고 다른 쪽은 막다른 골목길이었어요. 그런데 이제 다 연결되도록 만들었어요.

We can access this place through the 7 adjacent alleys. In the past, we could only access through one alley, and the rest of the alleys were all dead ends. But now, those alleys have been fixed to get connected with this space.

서울에서만 할 수 있는, 아니면 한국에서만 할 수 있는 건축 프로세스가 뭘까. 2년 전에 열었던 마곡의 미술관은 그야말로 누런 흙 밖에 안 보이는 농경지였던 곳이 서울의 전략적인 부도심이 되면서 지금은 완전히 새로운 신도시가 됐죠. 

I've been thinking about the architectural process that can only be done in Seoul or only in Korea. By the time the museum opened 2 years ago, Magok was just farmland covered with yellow soil, but as it strategically became the sub-central area of Seoul, it transformed into a whole new city.

저는 건축이 할 수 있는 다양한 가능성에 대해 계속해서 희망을 갖는 사람입니다. 앞으로 누군가의 현실이 되어야 할 어떤 특별한 땅에서의 건물을 상상하는 거니까 건축은 다른 창의적인 분야와는 다르게 끊임없이 직업상 낙관을 해야 합니다.

I'm a person who keeps on hoping to discover various possibilities of architecture. Since this job is about imagining a building on a special land that will become someone's reality in the future, an architect must be optimistic endlessly, unlike other creative fields.
