영상 교육, 제작을 지원하는 '국악 크리에이터 양성' 프로젝트입니다.

The “Gugak Artist Lab” initiative, launched by the National Gugak Center, aims to support traditional artists and encourage the development of online content rooted in traditional arts.

This endeavor focuses on fostering “Gugak Creators” by offering support in video education and production. It seeks to enrich and broaden the scope of traditional arts, exploring new possibilities and expanding its reach through regional programs and the inclusion of international participants. The project emphasizes creative and sensory experiences in the digital realm, paving the way for innovative expressions of traditional art forms.

[작품소개/ Introduction]

이 시대의 평범한 회사원 A씨. 일상에 갖혀 힘들게 살아가지만 돌아본 현실은 초라하기만 하다. 복권을 사고, 남들처럼 코인과 주식을 투자하지만 결과는 맨날 꽝이다.

틈만나면 "라떼는 말이야"하며 자신의 화려했던 과거를 늘어놓는 꼰대 과장이 있다. 지독하게 A씨를 못마땅하게 여기는 직속 상관이다. A씨의 동료들에게 A씨와 라떼 과장은 모두 짜증나는 존재들이다.

늦잠 자느라 11시가 넘어 출근한 A씨. 그 날도 어김없이 라떼 과장에게 '라떼는 말이야' 고문을 당한다.  A씨는 끊임 없이 쏟아지는 '라떼' 홍수에 정신이 혼미해 진다. 결국 정신을 잃고 지게목발소리 음악을 배경으로 시간 여행을 시작한다.

조선시대, 70년대로 넘어 다니며 낯선 공간에서 왠지 익숙한 얼굴들을 마주한다. 허름한 초가집 옆 뒷동산에 지게를 메고 콩꺾자를 노래하는 라떼 과장, 열심히 절구질, 키질을 하는 동료들. 다시 시간이 흘러흘러 많은 인파 속에 벚꽃놀이 취재를 하는 라떼 과장, 신문을 돌리고, 미싱을 돌리는 동료들을 만난다.

A씨는 시대는 다르지만 땀 흘리며 열심히 일하는 라떼 과장과 동료들의 모습은 변치 않음을 깨닫는다. A씨는 어느 시대, 어떤 곳에서도 자신의 일에 충실하고, 작은 성취에 감사하는 라떼 과장과 동료들의 모습을 보고 크게 감동한다.

노동의 고단함을 달래주는 우리 조상들의 "콩꺾자, 콩꺾자" 노랫가락은 현대를 살아가는 평범한 A씨들에게 마음의 희망을 싹틔우는 용한 주문이 아닐까 생각한다.

영상의 배경이 되는 노래 지게목발소리는 전북 익산지역의 토속민요로 지게 다리인 목발을 두드리며 부르던 일노래이다. 가사 중 "부귀영화 부러마소 내 몸 일신 천만금일세...(중략) 신세한탄 허덜마소 지게목발 억만금일세..."는 이번 "라떼, 꼰대?" 프로젝트의 영감을 준 대목이다. 

Meet Mr. A, a typical office worker. His life is a routine of daily struggles, set against a backdrop of unfulfilled aspirations. Like many, he tries his luck with lottery tickets and dabbles in cryptocurrencies and stocks, but success eludes him.

A key figure in his life is a condescending older manager who seizes every chance to reminisce with “Back in my day...” stories, often highlighting his own past achievements. This superior, who harbors a particular disdain for Mr. A, along with Mr. A himself, are sources of annoyance for their other colleagues.

One eventful day, Mr. A oversleeps and ends up coming to work well past 11 a.m. Predictably, he is subjected to yet another round of his superior's patronizing “Back in my day...” tirades. Overwhelmed by this relentless condescension, Mr. A's world spins and he faints, inadvertently embarking on a journey through time, accompanied by the sound of an A-shaped carrier's crutch.

His voyage takes him through different eras, from the Joseon Dynasty to the 1970s, where he encounters faces eerily familiar yet placed in strange settings. He observes his superior, the same “Back in my day” storyteller, singing “Let’s gather bracken” beside a modest thatched house, while his colleagues engage in traditional tasks like pounding in a mortar and winnowing. As time progresses, he sees the same superior reporting on cherry blossom celebrations, and his colleagues busy with newspaper distribution and operating sewing machines.

Through these encounters, Mr. A discovers an enduring truth: despite the passage of time, the diligent and dedicated nature of his superior and colleagues remains unchanged. He finds himself profoundly touched by their unwavering commitment to their duties and their ability to find joy in modest achievements, regardless of the era.

This leads Mr. A to ponder if the ancestral labor song “Let’s gather bracken, let’s gather bracken,” a tune that once eased the weariness of our forebears, could serve as a beacon of hope for modern-day individuals like himself. The background melody of the video, featuring the rhythmic sound of a carrier's crutch, is an authentic labor song from the Iksan region in Jeollabuk-do. Its poignant lyrics, “Don't envy the prosperity of others; cherish your own body...” and “Don't lament your life as miserable; even a carrier is precious...” served as an inspiration for this project.
