The “Gugak Artist Lab” initiative, launched by the National Gugak Center, aims to support traditional artists and encourage the development of online content rooted in traditional arts.

This endeavor focuses on fostering “Gugak Creators” by offering support in video education and production. It seeks to enrich and broaden the scope of traditional arts, exploring new possibilities and expanding its reach through regional programs and the inclusion of international participants. The project emphasizes creative and sensory experiences in the digital realm, paving the way for innovative expressions of traditional art forms.

[작품소개/ Introduction]

세상을 이루고 있는 만물 - 물, 흙, 나무, 불, 바람. 만물은 자연 현상의 기본적 원리를 나타내며, 순환성을 지닌다. 인간의 삶 역시 주기마다 변화하고 회귀하는 현상이 지속적으로 일어난다. 인간의 삶과 만물은 돌고 돌아 반복되는 것처럼 느껴지지만, 자연이라는 이름 아래 생성과 소멸을 거치며 끊임없이 새로워지고 더욱 발전한다.

서울, 경기지방을 중심으로 대중적으로 불리던 성악곡인 ‘12잡(雜)가’ 중 만물을 대표하는 5곡. 전통적인 메기고 받는 형식과 현대적인 연주 기법을 활용한 가야금 선율. 이 두 가지 재료를 중심으로 미술 기법 중 하나인 ‘콜라주’를 활용하여 음악을 제작하였다.

잡가의 〈雜 - 섞일 잡〉자의 의미와 미술의 〈Collage - 콜라주〉 기법에서 작품의 구성 원리를 가져왔다. ‘잡가와 잡가’, ‘경기소리와 가야금’, ‘국악과 하우스 뮤직’, ‘음악과 미술과 영상’을 섞고 붙여 작품을 제작하였다. 미시적으로는 ‘곡과 곡’, ‘노래와 악기’를 시작으로 거시적으로는 ‘장르와 장르’, ‘시간예술과 공간예술’ 까지 여러 융합적인 콜라주(雜)를 시도한 작품이다.

Everything in the world - water, earth, wood, fire, and wind. These elements represent the fundamental principles of natural phenomena, characterized by their cyclical nature. Human life also experiences continuous changes and recurrences in cycles. While human life and all nature seem to revolve in repetitive patterns, they constantly renew and evolve under the name of nature, going through cycles of creation and destruction.

This piece is based on five representative pieces from the traditional Korean vocal music collection, '12잡(雜)가,' which was popular in Seoul and the Gyeonggi Province.

The music combines traditional vocal delivery with contemporary performance techniques of the Gayageum. These two elements form the core of the composition, incorporating the artistic technique known as 'collage.'

The title '잡가(雜 - mixed)' takes inspiration from the meaning of '잡(雜)' and the artistic technique of 'Collage'. The composition process involves blending and juxtaposing 'japga and Japga,' 'Gyeonggi region music and Gayageum,' 'Korean traditional music and house music,' and 'music, art, and visuals.' On a micro-level, it explores the fusion of 'piece and piece,' 'song and instrument,' and on a macro-level, it explores the 'genre and genre,' 'temporal art and spatial art,' experimenting with various aspects of collage.
