[곡소개 Work Description]

‘마주 Maju’ 는 “마주하다”의 ‘마주’ 이다. 

 이 곡은 물 위에 비친 내 자신을 바라보는 장면을 상상하며 시작되었다. 그것은 나이기도 하면서, 동시에 내가 아니다. 

 ‘마주’는 표면적으로 동서양의 오래된 현악기인 가야금과 하프의 마주함을 보여주면서, 나와 세상의 마주함을, 궁극적으로는 내 자신과의 마주함을 노래한다. 메나리조의 선율로 잔잔하게 시작하여, 칠채 장단의 강렬한 리듬으로 이어지는 입체적인 곡이다.

“Maju” came from a Korean word meaning an “encounter.”

The composition of this piece has started by imaging a scene in which I was looking at my reflection in the water. The reflection was me, and it wasn’t me at the same time. 

Through an encounter between the gayageum and the harp (the two old sting instruments of the East and West, respectively), “Maju” sings about an individual’s encounter with the world, and ultimately,  with oneself. The music is dynamically structured: it begins with a gentle “menarijo” melody, then followed by a strong “chilchae” rhythm.

우음도(牛音島, Ueumdo)

우음도(牛音島) 혹은 음섬(音-)은 경기도 화성시 송산면 고정리에 있던 섬으로, 1994년 시화방조제 건설로 인해 육지가 되었다. 바람이 세게 불면 육지에서 소 울음 소리가 들린다고 해서 ‘우음도’라는 이름이 붙었다. 섬이었을 당시 인구 100여명이 살던 반농반어의 작은 섬이었다.

Ueumdo, also known as Ueumseom, was an island located in Gojeong-ri, Songsan-myeon, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do Province. In 1994, the island was connected to the mainland with the construction of the Sihwa Seawall. The name of the island, literally meaning “cattle sound island,” came from a legend that the residents of the island could hear mooing sounds from the mainland on a strong windy day. Before it became part of the mainland, Ueumdo had been a small island with a population of about 100 people who were engaged in farming and fishing.
