Work Description]

Yeonhuigyeong_Summer / Arrangement by Jeho Yun

Imagining what a Shangri-la for Korean traditional theatre (“jeontong yeonhui” in Korean) would look like, we prepared “Yeonhuigyeong.” This performance expresses the ebb and flow of the seasons through various elements of traditional theatre. Summer is the season of the blazing sun. The performers conduct rituals for heating the sun so that it can be kept hot. Shamanistic rhythms and electronic music create dynamic sounds, and the “pungmulnori” (a genre of Korean folk music and dance) dances add to the excitement of the performance.

Artwork]

Lee Sang Nam, 〈Landscapic Algorithm〉

“Landscapic Algorithm” (2010) is a large painting that occupies the whole wall of the lobby of the Gyeonggi MoMA. An “installation painting” or a “constructional painting” as the artist calls it, “Landscapic Algorithm” is one of a series of works of the same title which the artist has created since 2008. In this masterpiece, the artist converts artificial images and landscapes in contemporary society into abstract signs and symbols by using his unique artistic algorithm. On a white background, different circles (symbolizing life) and lines (symbolizing death) intersect, creating numerous stories and expressing various landscapes in contemporary society where images are floating around limitlessly.

Kang Ik Joong, 〈Wall of Hope〉

“Wall of Hope” (2008-2018) is an installation created as part of a project for collecting children’s artworks depicting their hopes and dreams. This giant mural has been completed through the participation of 50,000 South Korean children and support from more than 330 volunteers. “This work is dedicated to all the people,” says Kang. “Wall of Hope” is an outcome of a collaboration between Kang and Gyeonggi MoMA as well as citizens’ participation. The work and related activities are a good example for sustainable public art.
