[율마 YUL MA]

 ‘율마’는 전통음악을 연구하는 3인과 재즈피아니스트가 만난 창작음악 집단이다. 

‘율마’는 본래 측백나무과의 식물로써 그저 바라만 보면 향기를 내진 않으나 아래에서 위로 쓸어 올리면 향기를 내뿜어 방향제로써 좋은 역할을 하는 화초 이름이다. 만져보지 않으면 향기가 나지 않는 ‘율마’처럼, 바라만 봐서는 그 매력을 알기 어려운 국악이 ‘율마’의 성격과 비슷하다 생각하여 팀명으로 선정하였다. 때문에 팀 ‘율마’는 전통성을 해치지 않고 대중에게 쉽게 전달될 수 있는 음악을 대중들께 제공하여 국악의 향기를 음미 할 수 있도록 하는 촉매제 역할이 되고자 한다. 

Yulma is a music band consisting of three traditional music artists and a jazz pianist, who compose and perform original pieces.

“Yulma” is also a Korean word referring to the lemon cypress (family: Cupressaceae). Its branches give off scent if you brush against them, thus being able to be used as a natural air-freshener. The band was named Yulma because its members thought that Korean traditional music is somewhat similar to the lemon cypress in that like the lemon cypress that does not exude scent unless touched, you cannot appreciate the charm of Korean traditional music just by looking at it. Yulma aims to serve as a catalyst for the audience to enjoy the scent of Korean traditional music by providing them with music which is accessible to the public without losing its traditional nature.

[곡소개 Work Description]

수중고혼(水中孤魂, The Lonely Soul of the Drowned)

‘수중고혼’은 심청가 중 물 빠지는 대목을 각색한 곡으로 심청가의 눈대목 중 가장 많은 사랑을 받는 곡이다. 아버지의 눈을 띄우기 위해 공양미 삼백석에 남경장사 선인들께 몸이 팔려 창망한 바다에 몸을 던지는 심청이의 모습을 소리꾼의 입을 빌려 전기적 작가 시점으로 세세하게 표현한 곡이다. 

이 곡은 심청이가 인당수 바다에 당도하는 장면과 인당수에 빠지기 전 아버지와 고향을 그리워하는 장면 그리고 심청이가 물에 빠지는 장면으로 총 세 장면으로 구성된다. 

재즈 피아노와 아쟁, 소리북 그리고 소리꾼의 입을 통해 엇머리와 자진머리, 휘머리로 전개하여 국악의 대표 형식인 만·중·삭(慢中數)의 형식를 취하였다. 

“The Lonely Soul of the Drowned” is an adaptation of one of the most loved parts of the story of “Simcheongga,” where Simcheong jumps into the water. The vocals of this piece describe, in detail and from an omniscient viewpoint, Simcheong’s offering herself to Chinese sailors for 300 sacks of rice and throwing herself into the vast sea as a sacrifice so that her blind father could get back his sight.

The piece consists of three sections for the following scenes, respectively: Simcheong arrives at the sea called Indangsu; she misses her home and her father before jumping into the sea; she finally throws herself into Indangsu. 

The jazz piano, the “ajaeng” zither and the “soribuk” drum are played and the vocals are sung in “eotmori,” “jajinmori” and “hwimori” rhythms, following a form of “man-jung-sak” (slow-medium-fast), one of the typical tempo changes used in Korean traditional music

김녕 청굴물 Cheonggulmul ( Spring Water ) 

청굴물이 위치한 동네 이름은 청수동인데, 청수동의 원래 지명은 청굴동이다. 청굴물은 용암대지 하부에서 지하수(용천수)가 솟아나는 곳이다. 용암대지의 하부에는 물이 잘 스며들지 않는 점토층이 분포하고 있어 지표에 내린 빗물이 지하로 스며들지 못하고 해안선 부근에서 솟아나게 된다. 김녕 해안에는 여러 곳의 용천수가 있지만 청굴물은 그 중에 차갑기로 소문나 여름철이 되면 많은 사람들이 이 물로 병을 치료하기 위해 2-3일씩 묵어가곤 했다. 

Cheonggulmul is located in an area called Cheongsu - dong, originally named Cheonggul - dong. The source of the spring water, Yongcheonsu, is from the bottom of the lava plateau. Rainwater seeps into the ground until it reaches impermeable clay layer, which then flows out naturally to the surface. Several pools of fresh spring water are found along the coast of Gimnyeong, but Cheongulmul, widely known as the coldest of all, used to attract a number of people in Summer who believed this water had medical values or mysterious effectiveness for healing diseases.
